..is the ORIGINAL Texas Country genre that I am huge fan of today. One of the innovators of the Outlaw/Texas movement, his "story" is absolutely fascinating..from his beginnings as a radio dj to playing bass for Buddy Holly on that fateful "Winter Dance Party Tour". As history tells us, he gave up his seat on the plane so that JP Richardson (the Big Bopper) who was suffering from a cold could be more comfortable in the plane instead of the bus that had no heat! Talk about a life changing decision...it was the Day the Music Died when Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Richie Valens perished in the plane crash that he WOULD have been on.
He established himself as one of the greatest in, not only the "Outlaw Movement", but COUNTRY Music period. Always one of my musical heroes, the late great Waylon Jennings!! This video shot at the Ryman in Nashville 2 years before he died from complications caused by diabetes in 2002. Here is his cover of the Marshall Tucker Band hit that he took to #4 on the Billboard Hot Country Chart in 1976...One of my ALL TIME faves...."Can't You See"
